A City working toward Church Unity - Toowoomba Queensland

Toowoomba 2009 – a city working very much toward Unity among the Churches

In the last few years in Toowoomba the National Day of Thanksgiving has been preceded by a week of church unity meetings held in different denominations. On the National Day of Thanksgiving 2009, three city wide services were held at St Luke’s, St Barth’s and the Salvation Army. Each of the services were attended by people from many different denominations. At the Salvation Army service it was decided to continue to come together for a regular “Regional Prayer and Praise” meeting once a month starting in July. Many Thankyou cards were sent out or personally handed to people throughout the region. This year marked a very significant event as the Catholic and Anglican Bishops from Brisbane and Toowoomba signed a covenant to symbolize ongoing ecumenical programs between their churches. This also commemorated the 150 year long relationship between the churches and the 25th anniversary of the “Common Declaration”, a document supporting unity between the churches. This covenant includes the line “Relationships have continued to grow and ecumenical co-operation has been welcomed by both communities.”
